“Darling,” I told my husband, “We need a wheel cover for our Execuvan.”
“Whatever for?” John asked. He looked startled. After all, our 1979 Execuvan is not one of the classier vehicles parked by the roadside in Cowichan Bay. During village celebrations, like the Low Tide Festival, nearby business owners have been known to ask us to move it far from the view of their customers.
“Two reasons,” I answered my husband. “Protection from the elements, and protection from ridicule.”
“I don’t want to spend any money,” John warned. I could understand why. That summer we’d spent a fortune painting over the rust. But when I explained to the man I love that last year when I’d measured out our boat’s aft cabin mattress cover, I’d overestimated by 10 yards and had a whole roll of blue vinyl stuffed in one corner of our storage locker, naturally he was delighted.

When our youngest son got married in September last year, and then moved to Wellington, New Zealand we decided to skip the BC winter, and take a trip around the globe for 3 ½ months. We left Vancouver on December 2nd and on our way to New Zealand, where we spent 2 months, we stopped in Sydney, Australia, for 6 days.
Unique RVs #3
Everything began like a fairytale: Once upon a time there was a young girl in Virginia named Ross, who realised at the end of her teenage years that office work was not for her. She wanted to travel a lot and make a living from it at the same time, so she started taking pictures and photography took her from Antarctica, through Africa all the way to the northern part of Canada. She was able to make a living as a photographer, a very active life and on top of it all she got her pilot license. She had just come back from a cross-Canada expedition when she met her future husband Shahn, an entrepreneur and designer. Read the rest of Unique RVs #3

Almost two years ago, my wife Olive and I decided to sell our business in the Lower Mainland, sell our home in Langley, and move to BC’s beautiful Powell River to retire.
We traveled back to our home in Powell River via Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, Macau, Germany and Ireland. All in all it was a wonderful experience but the highlight of the trip was the time we spent in New Zealand. For three of the weeks in New Zealand we toured the South Island in a rented campervan. We didn’t realise quite how popular a campervan holiday was until we tried to book just a few months in advance of our trip, when most of the units were already booked. We did find one from a company called Juicy Rentals, kinda small, well used, but it worked out OK. After collecting the van from the Christchurch airport, we went around the South Island anti-clockwise.
For this story we did not have to travel anywhere, because one morning this rig was parked right on the street where I used to work. I walked around it a few times, later found out that the owner lives just across from my workplace. I’ve been working in Victoria for seven years and had never seen it before. There was a website address on the bumper, so a short e-mail to them brought a quick answer, and yes, they were more than happy to give me an interview. So on the next weekend I met two wonderful people: Ross and Shahn.
