Full-Timers Beware:

?Maybe I haven?t learned some full-timer lesson yet. I am proud of the fact that I live in my RV (when weather permits). I was heading south for my winter get-away, but made the mistake of heading south from Winnipeg. My usual spot is Peace Arch in BC. I was interrogated by a border guard on the US side. I told him the truth (perhaps a BIG mistake), but he didn?t believe anything I told him. He fingerprinted me and took my picture and put a card on my passport to require that I return to Canada mid-January. He had me in such a tizzy that I drove away thinking I had committed a crime, but couldn?t figure out what that was. I have gone back and forth over the border with no problems for 25+ years (although not as a full timer). On my way to visit relatives in NY State, I criss-crossed the border again and asked at both the Canadian side and the US side what I had done wrong. The US guards said that it was because I don?t own property in Canada, but they could do nothing. I would have to return to the Manitoba/North Dakota crossing to have it changed. So, after my visit to NY was over, I beelined back to that dreaded crossing. I asked if they could change the date, showing them my health coverage letter and bank statement to prove that I was truthful. They finally removed the card but said I was lucky the guy that signed the card wasn?t on duty, as he probably wouldn?t change it.

It remains to be seen what will happen next year when I want to go south for the winter, as I?m in the US border datebase. I?ll never go through that border crossing again. ~ Canadian full-timer
